AMBITIOUS innovates with cloud native solutions in the IoT and 5G era
In today's rapidly evolving technological
landscape, cloud-native solutions have emerged as a critical component for
modernizing and optimizing various digital operations. These solutions are
designed to fully exploit the advantages of cloud computing, ensuring
scalability, resilience, and agility. But what exactly is a cloud-native
platform, and how does it benefit the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G domains?
The future of innovation at the project meeting in Bologna
The AMBITIOUS consortium recently met in Bologna for a dynamic series of discussions aimed at fostering innovation in European SMEs.
This multi-day event of face-to-face networking, presentations and practical demonstrations highlighted the key milestones achieved so far and laid the foundations for the next phase of the project.
Tuesday, October 29, 2024, Zoom
Welcome to this event that will cover key topics in connectivity and cybersecurity, including discussions on cellular coverage inequality, the importance of ZeroTrust, and Starlink's performance in remote areas.
Fostering of IoT Solution Towards Smart Water Management
Case Urban Flood Prediction
In today's world, the frequency and intensity of natural disasters faced by cities are steadily increasing due to the impact of climate change. Especially, flood disasters occurring in urban areas can cause serious damage to infrastructure and social life. As a pilot implementation of the AMBITIOUS project, a flood monitoring and prediction system is being established to meet the needs of the city of Kuopio.
Since 2004, RE:LAB has been working in Interaction Engineering, demonstrating a strong track record in designing, prototyping, developing, and validating Human-Machine Interfaces.
The mission of RE:LAB is to enhance the relationship between people and technologies, enabling products and services to achieve higher levels of quality and competitiveness.
Artificial Intelligence at the service of care
On 18 April 2024, ExpoSanità highlighted the transformative impact of digital tools in healthcare, emphasising improved connectivity, efficiency and personalised treatments.
A key theme was telemedicine, which improves access to healthcare in remote and underserved areas. Remote patient monitoring and immersive technologies were also emphasised for their role in managing chronic diseases and supporting young people and those with special educational needs. The innovation efforts of the Emilia-Romagna region, in particular through the European project AMBITIOUS, were highlighted to promote collaboration.
Demographic ageing is a challenge for European healthcare systems and requires innovative solutions such as e-health and Assisted Living Technologies. These technologies improve the quality of care by promoting independent living, improving health and reducing the burden on carers. EU policy is now focussing on empowering older people and promoting active ageing. FRONTIDA ZOIS, a partner in the AMBITIOUS project, aims to utilise these technologies to improve the delivery of services. The AMBITIOUS platform helps elderly beneficiaries to connect with caregivers, maintain their independence and streamline care tasks, resulting in better organised services.
OTE is member of the Deutsche Telekom (DT) Group of Companies, and the incumbent telecommunications provider in Greece. OTE plays a key role in AMBITIOUS use cases by providing a tailor-made IoT solution, as well as 5G connectivity services.
Understanding the requirements and needs of users is invaluable in the development of products and services. But how can this crucial information be effectively gathered and formatted into an understandable form? We share our experience on how to do this professionally, yet in an approachable manner.
In an increasingly connected world, the Internet of Things (IoT) has become ubiquitous, revolutionizing industries ranging from healthcare to manufacturing. However, with the rapid expansion of the number of deployed IoT devices, concerns about security have been raised. To address this, companies are turning to solutions like ISO27001 [1] and SOC2 [2] to secure their ecosystems.

The evolution of digital tools has led to a revolution in the healthcare sector, offering new ways of connectivity and care that promise to improve access to care, the efficiency of services and the personalisation of treatments. Telemedicine, one of the key aspects of this revolution, has made it possible to provide medical care at a distance, overcoming geographical barriers and improving access to treatment for populations in remote or underserved areas. In addition, immersive technologies are increasingly helping to address the challenges related to the conditions of adolescents and people with special educational needs.
What strategies have the innovation actors in the Emilia-Romagna Region put in place to promote progress in this field?
Through the collaboration between Clust-ER Health and Clust-ER Innovate, both involved in the European AMBITIOUS project, the challenges that the ecosystem is facing through collaborative projects will be explained, also through European funding instruments that facilitate the emergence of partnerships to increase the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises. The event will be held in Italian.
Technology Clusters are collaborative hubs comprising companies, universities, research centers, and other public or private entities, dedicated to specific thematic areas. They can play an important role in helping regions to address transformative innovation policies in Europe.
On 30 and 31 October 2023, the inaugural meeting of the AMBITIOUS project took place in the oldest capital of Europe: Athens, Greece. On this occasion, more than 40 dedicated representatives of the eighteen partners of the consortium gathered at the headquarters of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation (OTE) to mark the beginning of an AMBITIOUS project that aims to advance the state of the art in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G and Internet of Things (IoT).
One of the features of the AMBITIOUS project is the promotion of interregional cooperation. By bringing together partners from different backgrounds and geographical locations, the consortium aims to create a melting pot of ideas, expertise and perspectives. The kick-off meeting in Athens served as a catalyst for this co-operative spirit. Delegates exchanged insights, harmonised their strategies and laid the foundations for an efficient working relationship.
At the centre of this initiative is the goal of advancing the state of the art in AI, 5G and IoT. The project aims to push the boundaries of innovation and drive progress in sectors identified as strategically important in the smart specialisation priorities of the participating regions, such as information and communication technology (ICT), environment, agriculture and health.
Beyond technological innovation, the project has a strong focus on commercialisation. The consortium has recognised the importance of translating cutting-edge research into tangible solutions that can benefit small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and society as a whole. It aims to bridge the gap between innovation and marketability and thus contribute to the economic growth of the participating regions.
The kick-off meeting in Athens was a testament to the enthusiasm and commitment of the consortium. On the agenda were discussions about the project timeline, potential challenges and the planned activities during the project period. The work packages were outlined in detail, with a particular focus on the tasks to be carried out in the coming months. The partners are prepared to develop digital solutions for the 5G era!

Exploring Aerial-IoT possibilities
Environmental monitoring in both industrial, rural urban districts, as well as in forests, is crucial for understanding, monitoring and mitigating the impact of human activities on existing ecosystems. Traditional monitoring methods often face limitations such as accessibility, infrastructure cost, and coverage, as well as long deployment times. Autonomous flying drones equipped with on-board sensors, offer a promising solution to overcome these challenges.
