Demographic ageing is without a doubt amongst the biggest challenges European health care systems face nowadays, putting pressure on the healthcare sector like never before.
Longevity comes with a series of challenges and opportunities for EU societies. Both the challenges (greater prevalence of chronic diseases, the globally rising shortage of healthcare workers, the financial discrepancies of care and the lower quality of life) and the opportunities (intergenerational connection, free time for meaningful activities, accumulated experience and wealth), all underline the necessity for people in third age living in community (either autonomous or in need of care) to migrate towards a more person-centered and coordinated model of care that supports the optimization of their abilities and capacities.
To this direction, EU policies reflect a movement away from seeing the later years as a time of decline and dependency, towards the empowerment and participation of older people in all aspects of social and economic life, supporting longevity and active ageing.
However, this is contrasted with exponential advances in innovative technological developments. Thanks to digital innovations today’s healthcare and caregiving services have tools at their disposal to improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and management of health-related issues and to monitor and manage lifestyle-habits that impact health.
Assisted living technologies have been shown to have great potential in fostering independent living, improving mental and physical health, and increasing quality of life. The need for these systems arises from the desire to enable patients and seniors to live independently in their homes without relying heavily on their families or caretakers. At the same time, they can also reduce caregiver burden, which can lead to more targeted and better quality care.
